Virginia McKinley

Among my favorite quotations is the following, by painter Francis Picabia:

“Notre tete est ronde pour permettre a la pensee de changer de direction.  (Our head is round to permit thought to change direction.)

My favorite alternative mode of seeing is to become more aware of the “negative spaces” in art and natural forms.  I strive to incorporate sensitivity to the negative spaces along with the most prominent forms as I create new images.  My interest in negative spaces and in natural forms has in turn led to a fascination with interactive kinetic paper (art pop-ups) that I create and house in a variety of hinged frames and small decorative cabinets.

For me, the arts require both patience and improvisation, and the arts provide a leap of faith.  I believe the arts are essential to us all, not just as refreshing antidotes to repetitive routine and the daily rush, but as a means of opening up our minds, our hearts, our spirits to new possibilities in a world whose troubles cannot be resolved unless our thoughts and behaviors truly do “change direction” in creative and passionate ways.
